Renovation at The Paper Canoe, Duck, NC

This project involved tearing out a fire damaged interior and renovating the entire restaurant space. All of the cabinetry, tables, bar, tongue and groove walls and ceiling, and trim job are entirely custom. Most of the wood used is locally sourced cypress.

The floors are hickory with an oil finish- a very forgiving, easily repaired finish.

The bar and bar room tables are natural and stained cypress, with maple edging for wear and finished with a 1/4" epoxy pour.

This is just a place holder.

The nautical theme is incorporated throughout and the bar back and HVAC cabinets are boats created on-site, made entirely out of cypress. Bent wood is a specialty.

The dining room tables are made of recycled mixed hardwood with maple wear edges that were salvaged from a cotton mill. Again the finish is a durable 1/4" epoxy pour.

Renovation at The Fin and Claw, Corolla, NC
The previous restaurant in this space had been poorly maintained and all of the finish surfaces throughout the kitchen and public areas were replaced. The brick work in the dining/bar area is actually recycled brick re-sawn into  1/2" thick "tiles." This is a commercially available product. We installed over 1000 sq. ft. of this tile (in addition to almost 1000 sq. ft. of quarry tile in the kitchen.

Again the tables are recycled mixed hardwood, with maple edges and a 1/4" epoxy pour.

The stone is Pennsylvania blue stone and the stone work and wrought iron work were fabricated entirely on-site.
This entire renovation was done in approximately 10 weeks. These photos show more detail.

Renovation at Trio, Kitty Hawk, NC
This combination of retail wine and beer with a restaurant/bar is in a space previously occupied by a bank. It is situated in a strip mall.

Our contract was for the cabinetry, bars, and tables. The beer and wine displays are essentially similar to stained oak bookcases and there are something like 60 in the store.

The dispenser cabinet is six sided with 3 wine dispenser machines in each. The wine dispenser machines are manufactured by NAPA Technologies and each machine dispenses four different wines on a nitrogen gas system. The nitrogen gas prevents spoilage and the whole system is pretty slick. We built two cabinets that dispense a total of 24 different wines at a time.

There are two bars, a wine tasting bar and a full service bar. These bars feature hammered copper tops with classic oak bar rails and are finished with an epoxy pour. The fronts are mixed recycled hardwood with hand-made wrought iron foot rails.

The tables, cash register stands and deli counter are all recycled mixed hardwoods with epoxy pour tops.

Kayaks and Canoes

While living in northern Maine I developed these kayak designs primarily as "down-river" boats. There are a couple of sea kayak designs but my passion is for multi-day river trips. These were made primarily of northern white cedar with other woods for contrast and finished with one or more layers of fiberglass fabric and epoxy resin.

My personal favorite is a single seat 16'-6" kayak with a 28" beam. This design is very stable, fast, maneuverable and handled long trips comfortably. It's capacity is over 600 lbs. but weighs only 55 lbs.

Kayak and canoe paddles, and nautically themed bookcases sold like crazy- they were quite a distraction from the boat building.

Custom Furniture

Custom tables, benches, cabinets, and incidental pieces add refinement and utility to a room. Sometimes it has to be just the right size, or maybe you are trying to make a statement- let your imagination run wild!
